This was due to the fact that an indentation was made over this marking in the side rail, which was to facilitate stuffing the cartridges from the cartridge strip into the magazine of the rifle. 88/14, it was sometimes partially removed. The Turks made new barrels and bedded all parts in a new stock. The placement of this marking meant that when the weapon was modified to Gew. ![]() As the story goes the bolts were removed to disable the weapons after the war and were later rematched to the guns without regard to numbers. The numbers match on the rear sight and the receiver only. So serial number matches are hard to come by in this case.
